Winnifred Baxter was a key figure in women’s sport at the University of Toronto during the World War II era.  She served as the head swimming coach for 10 seasons from 1945-55, winning league titles five times (1946, 1948, 1950, 1952, 1953).
 
Baxter was also the captain of the St. Hilda’s interfaculty senior basketball team and competed in interfaculty swimming and hockey.  She was named the Intercollegiate swimming Ornamental and Style Champion in 1939 and sat on a number of athletic committees, including the Women’s Senior T-Holders’ Directorate from 1940-41.
