High jumper Alex Zaliauskas enjoyed great international success before dominating the intercollegiate scene upon arriving at the University of Toronto.  The 1990 Pan American junior high jump champion also competed at the 1990 Commonwealth Games and 1992 Summer Olympics, and placed fourth at the 1996 Olympic Trials. In 1991, Alex was ranked eighth in the world and qualified for the  World Track and Field World Championships.

As a Blue, Alex went undefeated during the 1996-97 season, soaring to both the OUA and CIAU titles. That season, the five-time OUA all-star and all-Canadian became the first athlete to qualify for the CIAU championships in all three jumps events. He took gold in high jump and placed sixth in long jump and eighth in triple jump. Alex’s remarkable performances earned him the University of Toronto 1996-97 male athlete of the year title.

In total, Alex earned an outstanding five CIAU gold medals and three OUA golds during his time with the Varsity Blues. He still maintains both the national (2.24m, 1993) and provincial (2.28m, 1991) men’s high jump records.
