John Naccarato earned eight provincial titles and coached over 20 provincial all-stars during his 21 years (1981-2001) at the helm of the Varsity Blues tennis program.
As a five-year member of the men’s tennis team, John earned five OUAA titles. He twice won gold in doubles and was a member of the four-player team that won 23 of 24 matches at the York tournament in 1981.
John shifted his focus to coaching towards the end of his playing career and was one of only 90 people in Canada to earn level 3 tennis instruction certification. He took over the coaching reigns in 1984 as a player-coach during the first season, and in full-time capacity in the following years, replacing fellow U of T Sports Hall of
Fame inductee Ken Wood.
John’s teams won two OUAA and one OWIAA title in his first three years as head coach and he was later named an Arbor Award recipient in recognition of his outstanding volunteer service to the university.
