A world-class athlete in field hockey, Phyllis Ellis played five seasons with the Varsity Blues, including the CIAU championship team in 1981 and the OWIAA champions/CIAU silver medallists in 1982. She won numerous OWIAA all-star awards, was the UofT female athlete of the year in 1980-81, a CIAU all-Canadian in 1982-83, and a Silver "T" recipient. 

Phyllis also played several years on Canada's national team, including the silver medallist squad in the 1983 World Cup and the 1984 Olympics. A strong advocate for enhancing opportunities for women in sport, Phyllis founded the successful FAME (Female Athletes Motivating Excellence) program at the Ontario Ministry of Tourism & Recreation in 1986. She also founded two theatres in Minneapolis, one of which is dedicated to women.
