Field Hockey
When Wendy Baker was guarding the net, opponents knew a goal would be hard to come by. In her first season with the Blues, she and fellow field hockey goaltender Zoe MacKinnon allowed only four goals en route to the 1982 OWIAA title and CIAU silver medal. In 1983, she helped the Blues to an undefeated regular season and the OWIAA championship banner. That season Wendy was named a member of the CIAU tournament 11 (tournament all-stars), helping the Blues finish with a silver medal for the second consecutive season.
After the Blues earned the OWIAA bronze medal in 1984, Wendy was team co-captain and led the Blues to both the provincial and national titles in 1985. Wendy was also named the most valuable player of the CIAU championship game. In her graduating year, she earned U of T’s Clara Benson Honour Award, recognizing her outstanding ability in sport and scholarship.
Following a year’s hiatus, Wendy returned to the field to help the Blues to another undefeated season. In a particularly memorable final game, the team overcame blizzard-like conditions to win the 1986 OWIAA title. Wendy left the intercollegiate sports world on a high note and was named an OWIAA all-star and CIAU all-Canadian after allowing only four goals in the regular season and six all year.
Wendy also made an impact in international competition, helping Canada to win bronze at the 1987 Pan American Games and finish sixth at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
