Smirle Lawson was a star halfback on the Football Blues in 1907-08-09, and was dubbed the original "Big Train" in Canadian football. He was the outstanding player in first Grey Cup game(1909), as he scored one touchdown and kicked 2 singles in leading the Varsity Blues to a 26-6 victory over Toronto Parkdale. After graduation he played for the Toronto Argonauts(1911-14) and faced many of his formed teammates in 1911 when Blues won their third consecutive Grey Cup title by defeating the Argos 14-7.

Lawson returned to the University as a professor of Surgery and served as Chief Coroner of Ontario from 1937-1962. Lawson was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and he is also a member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
