Dr. Mossie Waddington Kirkwood was Dean of Women and Lecturer in English at University College in 1920 when she was appointed first Chairperson of the founding committee to establish the UofT Women's Athletic Association. When the Women's Athletic Directorate was officially approved in 1921, she was appointed as one of two faculty representatives, together with Dr. Clara Benson. Dr. Kirkwood was WAA President from 1945-62 and served on the WAA Directorate for more than 40 years as a strong proponent of women's athletics programs and facilities at the University.
Dr. Kirkwood was Principal of St. Hilda's College from 1936-53 and retired from teaching in 1960. In memory of her lasting contribution, the Women's T-Holders' Association established in 1986 the annual Kirkwood Award for the undergraduate who best exemplifies her quiet dedication to the administration of athletics and recreation programs.
