Hall of Fame
As a UofT student, Juri Daniel competed in intercollegiate Track and Field from 1951-53, winning the Gold Medal in Javelin in 1953. He later Coached the men's Swimming Blues for 4 years (1964-65 to 1967-68), winning 4 Ontario championships and 3 CIAU national championships. He was named CIAU Swimming Coach of the Year in 1967 and was active in gaining acceptance for swimming as CIAU sport. He had been national swimming champion in his native Estonia in 1942-44, and his son Juri was a member of UofT league and national Swimming championship teams.
Dr. Daniel was appointed to the faculty of the UofT School of Physical and Health Education in 1962 served as SPHE Director from 1972-79 and was named a Professor Emeritus on his retirement in 1989. He was an active proponent of the amalgamation of the men's and women's programs, served as a member of the UofT Athletics Council from 1972-79 and Director of the Graduate Sports and fitness Programme of Hart House from 1963-78.
