Elizabeth, known as Ballen to her friends, didn’t let World War II stop her from doing what she loved best. In 1940, her passion for athletics helped her win the provincial intercollegiate badminton championship.

While intercollegiate sports were put on hold during the war years, Ballen was a member of the University College basketball team for three years and also played on the UC badminton team, winning two team championships and three consecutive singles titles. She also participated on the PHE hockey and swimming teams and was a member of the PHE championship basketball team.

In addition to her own athletic endeavours, Ballen contributed to U of T sports as an administrator, acting as the UC women’s athletic director in 1941-42.
