Sandra Turney left a long-lasting legacy on Varsity Blues intercollegiate athletics. As an athlete, Sandra was a WIAU all-star basketball player and in 1979 received U of T’s Dr. Clara Benson Honour Award, given to the female student-athlete in her graduating year for outstanding ability in athletics and scholarship. In addition, she was the 1981 Loudon Award winner in recognition of her
outstanding service in the advancement of athletics at the university – the first female student to receive U of T’s most prestigious athletics service award.
After graduation in 1981, Sandra became the Ryerson Rams women’s basketball head coach, a position that she held until 1985. She was appointed the president of U of T’s Women’s T-Holders’ Association from 1993-95. During this time, Sandra dealt with severe funding cutbacks and was a key contributor to the T-Holder auction program that raised thousands of dollars for women’s sport. Sandra is currently the executive director of Dog Guides Canada.
