Varsity Blues quarter-back William C. “Billy” Foulds earned his place in history as a member of the famous 1909 and 1910 intercollegiate champions and Grey Cup winning football teams. Foulds built upon his playing success as coach following his graduation from engineering in 1911 with both the Toronto Argonauts and the Varsity Blues. He watched as his Argonauts were beaten by the Blues in 1911 and rejoiced as the Argos beat the Blues three years later.

Known as a great quarter-back during his playing days, Foulds was a prominent player for the Blues from 1908 through 1911. He earned his first, second and third colors, participated as a member of the Athletic Directorate in 1910-11, and served as the vice-president of the Football Club that same year.

Prior to the First World War, he alternated coaching duties between the Blues and the Argonauts. As coach of the first Varsity Blues squad fielded after the war (1919-20), Foulds was charged with creating a team from a group of inexperienced but willing recruits. While the team failed to win the championship that year, Foulds helped to lay the foundation for team’s future successes. He also played a key role in the post-war football expansion on campuses across Ontario. He was instrumental in the development of rules for the Canadian Rugby Union and ultimately in the CIAU’s adoption of these rules for intercollegiate football.

Billy Foulds was an inaugural member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
