Swimming has always played an important part in Judy Garay’s life. As an undergraduate student at Victoria College she helped to build the strong Varsity Blues swimming legacy as a member of four consecutive CIAU and OWIAA team championships. As an individual competitor, she helped to capture the title by winning every breaststroke competition in provincial and national intercollegiate championship events from 1979 to 1983.

Judy's outstanding career was crowned with a glorious 1982-83 season in which she was the Carling O'Keefe Athlete of the Week; a CIAU All-Canadian; as well as the OWIAA and CIAU breaststroke gold medallist. In that same season, she earned a Silver T and was named the University of Toronto's Female Athlete of the Year.

Judy was also a force on the national and international scene. She represented Canada in the 1978 Commonwealth Games where she made the finals in the breaststroke and she narrowly missed qualifying for the 1980 Olympic Games by 6/100th of a second.

In addition, Judy was instrumental in advancing aquatics outside of the pool as demonstrated in 1981 when she earned the Nancy Lee Award for leadership and behind the scenes organization. These are skills that Judy continues to use as an aquatics instructor at Upper Canada College Prep School in Toronto. She is also actively involved in athletic activities with her three children, coaching both swimming and soccer teams.
