Yates Cup Champions

The 1951 Varsity Blues football team was no stranger to success. U of T had an undefeated record of 8-0-1 on the year, outscoring their opponents 152-60 before claiming the program’s 18th Yates Cup trophy.

One of only seven Blues football teams to go undefeated during the regular season, the team garnered an impressive eleven all-stars nods. First team allstars were Bob Dale and Jack Roberts at halfback, fullback Steve Oneschuk, guard Marshall Hames and John Evans at tackle, while halfbacks Bob Bewley and Bill McFarlane, quarterback Alex Lawson, centre Al Daney, tackle Joe Harris and end Al Brown also received second team all-star recognition.

Alex Lawson received the Johnny Copp trophy as the team MVP while John Evans earned the first of his record two Biggs Trophy selections in recognition of his contributions to U of T athletics programs.

Head coach Bob Masterson earned co-coach of the year honours, while 12 members of the team went on to play in the CFL. Four members of the team have already received individual inductions into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame. Evans was inducted in the inaugural year (1987), followed by Oneschuk in 1988. Assistant coach Dalt White was inducted in 1994 and Bob Masterson joined the group in 2006.
