The 1954 Varsity Blues football team was the first squad to win a Yates Cup on the road, defeating the Western Mustangs 9-8 in London. Co-captain Steve Oneschuk scored all nine points in the final game. Oneschuk also earned the Johnny Copp Memorial Trophy as the team’s most valuable player. Oneschuk, along with Bob Waugh and Fred Smale, earned league all-star honours, while 22 members of the squad were drafted to CFL teams. George Stulac was awarded U of T’s George M. Biggs Trophy, given annually to a graduating male student-athlete who has contributed most to U of T athletics from the standpoint of leadership, sportsmanship and performance. The team was characterized by their fighting spirit, playing efficiency and their ability to come back during a tough game.
