Gaye Stratten set several national and league records as a member of Varsity teams which won the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union and Ontario Universities Athletic Association championships in 1967, 1968 and 1969. He earned 14 CIAU Gold Medals and 15 OUAA Gold Medals, and was team captain and Bickle Award winner in 1969. He also played a key role on two UofT champions in OUAA Water Polo, served on the Men's Athletic Directorate and received the Biggs Trophy in 1969 for Outstanding Leadership, Sportsmanship and Performance.

Gaye was a Gold Medallist at the Canadian swimming championships from 1962-65, held Canadian Open records in both the 100 & 200 yard backstroke, and compete at the 1967 World Student Games in Tokyo. Currently (1990) head coach at McMaster University, he was head coach of the Canadian team at the 1975 Pan-American Games and 1983 World Student Games.
