Yates Cup Champions, Vanier Cup Champions

The 1993 Varsity Blues compiled a program-best 11-1 overall record en route to their 25th Yates Cup and second Vanier Cup title. Under the guidance of head coach Bob Laycoe, the Blues went 6-1-0 during regular season play, suffering only one loss to the Western Mustangs.

The Blues exacted revenge when it counted in the Yates Cup final, topping the Mustangs 24-16 to earn the provincial title. After defeating the Concordia Stingers 26-16, in the Churchill Bowl at SkyDome, the Blues captured the 29th Vanier Cup championship in a game to be remembered. Glenn McCausland scored on an 81-yard punt return, a Vanier Cup record, to pace Toronto to an exciting 37-34 victory over the Calgary Dinos. Linebacker Barry McCamus notched the eventual game-winning touchdown on a 22-yard interception return. Calgary could have sent the game into overtime, but Blues lineman John Raposo blocked a 22-yard field goal attempt with 10 seconds remaining.

McCausland won the Dalt White Trophy and the Ted Morris Memorial Trophy as the MVP of the Yates Cup and Vanier Cup, respectively. Quarterback Mario Sturino was awarded the Maury Van Vliet Trophy as the MVP of the Churchill Bowl.

Fifth-year linebacker and punter Lou Tiro won the OUA Presidents’ Trophy as the league’s top defensive player and also the CIAU Presidents’ Trophy as the country’s most outstanding defensive player. Tiro, offensive lineman David Scandiffio and wide receiver Francis Etienne were all named CIS all-Canadians and ten Blues players were selected as OUAA all-stars.
