Anne Hewett’s professional life was dedicated to the development of women's health and physical activity at the University of Toronto. She was appointed to the staff as an instructor and basketball coach in 1961 and became Secretary-Treasurer of the Women's Athletic Association in 1963. A tireless administrator, Anne was named Director of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education (Women) in 1967 and held the position for a decade until the amalgamation of the men's and women's Departments in 1977. She then became the Instruction Co-ordinator and later the Assistant Director of the combined department until her retirement in 1984.

Anne was responsible for the 1974 re-organization of the women's athletic department into four units: Excellence (Intercollegiate), Recreation, Instruction and Fitness, a structure that that was a model for the next major transition. She guided the department through one of its greatest changes: the re-organization and amalgamation of the men's and women's divisions. Always an advocate, Anne used her tremendous skill and passion fighting for salary equality between the university's men's and women's athletic instructors. Throughout her career she was a mentor and highly regarded by her colleagues in the provincial and national intercollegiate sport organizations.

Anne passed away in 1997 following a brief illness, but her legacy continues through the Ann C. Hewett Award for a female student who has developed her life skills through participation in varsity sport and in the administration and
governance of university sport and recreation programs.
