Hall of Fame
Thomas Arthur Reed was a valued member of U of T’s staff from 1906-46. During his career, he was the lead on many athletics projects including the planning, financing and construction of Varsity Arena, which opened in 1926 at a cost of $250,000, and several upgrades to Varsity Stadium, including the landmark concrete bleachers. His major legacy, however, is the authorship of The Blue and White, a comprehensive historical record of U of T men’s athletics from 1893-1944.
Reed was appointed the financial secretary to the men’s athletic association in 1914, and was involved in revising its constitution and operating procedures. In 1936, the intramural sports committee donated a trophy in his name to the college or faculty winning the intramural all-year high point championship. Following his retirement, a bronze plaque in honour of T.A. Reed’s outstanding contributions to U of T athletics was unveiled inHart House.
He served as a lecturer on the history of Toronto and Ontario, and was secretary of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and an active member of the St. Augustine’s church choir.
