Emma Robinson began her rowing career in 1990 as a member of the novice crew at the University of Toronto. She showed early promise and won U of T's first gold in over ten years at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia in the spring of 1991. In 1992, she won Gold at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, and in 1993 Robinson competed in the World University Games, winning Gold (eights) and Silver (fours). She also earned a Bronze medal in heavyweight fours at the 1993 World Championships.

Her success as a Varsity Blue sparked an interest from the national team coaches, and after only three years of experience, Robinson was recruited to join the Canadian National Rowing Team. Robinson was a member of the Silver-winning eights at the 1996 Olympics. Her decorated career includes Gold medals in pairs and eights at the Head of the Charles, the World Cup, Pan American Games, and the World Championships.

In 1999, she was nominated for the Lou Marsh Award for Canadian Athlete of the Year. In that same year, she was co-winner of the Tracy Wilson and Rob McCall Trophy for Outstanding Pairs Team at the Canadian Sports Awards and was also named the Ontario Female Athlete of the Year.
