Known as "one of Canada's best half-milers," George Melbourne "Mel" Brock was an active member of several intercollegiate teams during his undergraduate career including basketball, football, soccer and track.As a member of the track team from 1910-12, Mel was pivotal in their success, helping to lead them to the championships in 1910. He served as team captain in 1910 and 1911, setting a varsity record of 2:01:05 for the 800-m in 1911. A strong international competitor, Mel represented Canada at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, where he placed fourth in the 800-meters. He was also a prominent player on the Varsity basketball team (1910-13), the soccer team (1911) and the football team (1912).Mel's commitment to the athletic program at the U of T extended beyond his team involvement, he served as a member of the Athletic Directorate from 1911-13 and as a member of the Advisory Board in 1912 and 1913. He is also credited as one of the driving forces, along with "Dutch" McPherson, of organized student spirit at U of T.After graduation he became an English instructor at the University of Western Ontario and coached their football team to the Canadian Junior Football Championship in 1914.
Mel went to France with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in the First World War and attained the rank of a major.
