Swimmer Beryl Lewis Bevan represented U of T for three years, during which time she was a member of the 1952 and 1953 championship teams, as well as an individual champion in 1953 and 1954.Beryl was a outstanding athlete, setting provincial, national and international records throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s. She held four provincial records, three Ontario and one Quebec; three Canadian records, including the 200-yd backstroke set in 1950; and four international records, including two state records set at the Michigan State Championships in 1949.Deeply committed to the sport of swimming, Beryl served as team captain, coach and president of the swim club while a student. She was also an active member of the Women's Athletics Association Executive (Directorate) and active in intramural sports, where she participated on championship basketball and softball teams.In 1968, after many years of lobbying the City of Brampton, Beryl was successful in her struggle to have an indoor pool built. Soon after, she and her husband George Bevan founded the Chinguacousy Swim Club (now known as the Cobra Swimming Club), which they coached until 1976. Beryl continues to swim for personal fitness three or four times each week.
