When Marj Shedd joined the University of Toronto athletic program in 1964, she had already earned a national reputation as an outstanding athlete in both volleyball and badminton. She successfully coached U of T women’s teams in Volleyball (1964-1974) and Badminton (1977-1991) until her retirement in 1991. During her 28 years of coaching, U of T captured 7 league Gold Medals in volleyball plus 5 Ontario Gold Medals and 7 Silver Medals in badminton. In addition to her outstanding coaching, Marj also shared her remarkable skills as a racquets instructor in the School of Physical and Health Education and the Lifestrides instruction program.

Known as “Canada’s Lady of Badminton,” Marj ruled the sport for more than 20 years, winning 44 provincial and 24 national titles in singles, doubles and mixed including four national triple crowns. She represented Canada in 6 Uber Cup competitions, including the first International Women’s Uber Cup in 1956-57, and also at the 1970 Commonwealth Games. Marj also played on national championship teams in both basketball and volleyball, and represented Canada in volleyball at the 1967 Pan-American Games. It is little wonder that in 1970, Marj was selected to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
