If you were here in the mid-1970s and needed to get something done in Physical Education, you’d probably be told to talk to Susan Scott – if you could catch her between games!

Susan, who graduated from PHE in 1975 and received a bachelor of education from U of T in 1976, was on the Varsity field hockey team from 1971 to 1975, which never lost a league game en route to five consecutive Ontario Championships. She was also a captain for two years and a key member of the initial CIAU championship team in 1975. Susan played on the Ontario provincial Field Hockey team and was on Canada’s national team in the 1975 World Field Hockey Championship in Edinburgh. Because at the time, field hockey was not an Olympic or Commonwealth event, this was the ‘pinnacle’ for the sport. Susan also competed in the Canada Summer Games team and the Ontario Summer Games.

At U of T, besides field hockey, she played Varsity basketball from 1971-1975 and was captain in 1974-75. Add to that intercollegiate badminton doubles champ and intramural badminton, archery, volleyball, ice hockey and golf – you get the picture! Susan loved sports. It’s no wonder she was regarded as the pre-eminent U of T athlete of the early and mid-1970s.

She was involved on the administrative side as well as the School of Physical and Health Education representative on the Women’s Athletic Council. As WAC President, she organized a student delegation to City Hall to press for approval of the application for the new Athletic Centre. Susan was also an intramural convenor and referee. She received the Beverly Vickers Award (1971), the Benson Award (1975) and a Silver T (1975).
