1985-86, 1986-87 Women’s Field Hockey Teams
OWIAA and CIAU Champions
University of Toronto field hockey teams have a reputation for excellence, yet players on the 1985 and 1986 Varsity Blues teams stand out among the greats for their remarkable performances on the pitch. The women won back-to-back OWIAA and CIAU titles and both teams went undefeated with 15-0-2 records throughout the regular season and playoffs.
In 1985, the Blues defeated York (3-0) to claim the provincial title. Head coach Liz Hoffman, who is being inducted as a U of T Sports Hall of Fame builder this year, was named the OWIAA and CIAU coach of the year, while Stephanie Hansuld, Lisa Lyn and Bernadette Casey were named OWIAA all-stars and CIAU all-Canadians. The team defeated the University of New Brunswick (6-5) in penalty strokes to win the CIAU banner. Wendy Baker, who is also being inducted this year, was named the most valuable player of the CIAU championship game.
The talented team saw another double win in 1986. The Blues again beat York (5-1) to win the OWIAA championship with Casey, Tina Farrar, Vicki Smith and Karen Whitfield earning league all-star status. The Blues wrapped up the perfect season with another win over York (2-1), this time taking the national title. Casey, Smith and Whitfield were named CIAU all-Canadians. The Blues outscored their opponents 118-8 over 27 games during the outdoor season.
