As a member of the Varsity Blues swimming team, Douglas Gibson set Intercollegiate records in the 200yd and 440yd freestyles in 1949-50 and the 100yd, 220yd and 440yd freestyles in 1950-51. In 1951 he was Swimming Club Secretary and won the Bickle Award as the Blues outstanding swimmer. As a key member of Blues championship team in 1951-52, he won the 220yd and 440yd freestyles and the 400yd freestyle relay, and was the Club Vice-President. He won two relays in 1952-53.

In Intramural competition during 1949-50, he set records in the 200yd and 440yd freestyles and played Water Polo. He was a member of the U of T Men's Athletic Directorate in 1951-52. Gibson was a member of Canada's 1948 Olympic Team while a student at Ridley College in St. Catharines. He died in 1993.
