Throughout his twenty-year career with the Varsity Blues, Dave McMaster nurtured one of the strongest athletic traditions at the university and helped to create a new audience for women’s ice hockey around the world. As head coach from 1967-69 and 1975-93, McMaster led the Varsity Blues to an enviable list of accomplishments, including 12 OWIAA titles in 14 years.

Considered a hockey genius by advocates and opponents alike, McMaster’s 82 per cent success rate while coach of the Blues is a strong illustration of his abilities. Under his guidance, the Blues won 212 OWIAA league and playoff games, tying 22 games and losing only 38.

An outstanding coach and ambassador for intercollegiate and provincial hockey, McMaster also helped to develop women’s hockey across Canada and around the world. His tireless efforts have helped make the dream of international hockey for women a reality. McMaster has coached the Canadian national team - frequently dipping into the talent pool on the Varsity Blues - to great success. He coached the 1987 women’s team that won the gold medal at the unofficial first-ever women’s world hockey tournament. He reprised his coaching role in 1990 at the first official IIHF Women’s World Championship, where the women again won the gold medal.

Dave McMaster is an outstanding coach and ambassador for women’s intercollegiate, national and international hockey. His participation at the University of Toronto helped to establish a hockey dynasty that remains strong.
