Conn Smythe began his Varsity athletics career in 1912 as a member of the Engineering team in the intramural Football league and played on the Blues Intermediate Football champions in the fall of 1913. Conn was captain of the Blues OHA Junior Hockey champions in 1914-15, earned the Military Cross during World War I and then played on the Senior Blues in 1919-20
During the 1920s, Conn Smythe compiled and outstanding coaching record with the Blues, as his teams won 6 intercollegiate and OHA titles. In 1926-27, he coached the Varsity Grads to Allan Cup championship and the team was undefeated in all OHA games. Conn began the 1927-28 season as coach of the Varsity Grads, but did not accompany the team during their Gold Medal success at the 1928 Olympic Winter Games. He is best known as the founder of Maple Leaf Gardens and as owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
