Mary Foster was an talented athlete in several sports and also served the athletics program as an administrator and coach. She was a member of the Varsity Blues in badminton, winning the WIAU title in her only season, and also played three years of basketball (intermediate 1955 & 1956; senior 1957, championship team). At the interfaculty level, she competed in basketball (three years), badminton (three years, two championships), softball (three years, three championships) and tennis (two years). Foster also served for three years on the Women's Athletic Association Directorate, was the WIAU student representative for two years and WAA Secretary-Treasurer from 1960-63. In her graduating year, Foster received two major U of T athletic awards: the Victoria College Senior Stick and a Varsity Silver T.

In 1960, she was instrumental in the revivial of women's intercollegiate ice hockey after an hiatus of 10 seasons, and coached the Blues for three seasons (1960-63), winning three league titles. She also coached the volleyball Blues from 1960-63, and her players included U ofT Sports Hall of Fame members Carol Ann Wood Letheren and Viiu Kanep. Foster has been a staff member for many years at McMaster University and is a member of the Sports Hall of Fame in Sarnia (1992) and McMaster (1993).
