John Ireton made an immediate impact after joining the Varsity Blues squash program in 1957-58. In his first year of competition, he won the Ontario junior squash championship and was a member of the Blues co-champion team at the Canadian intercollegiate tournament.
The following year, John led U of T to the first of two provincial titles he would earn during his intercollegiate career (1958-59, 1960-61). He was a two-time finalist in Canadian singles and was U of T’s first winner of the Molson Trophy, awarded to the intercollegiate individual champion.
In 1960, the Blues won the Ontario provincial team championship for the first time in program history. John won individual titles in the junior, Toronto and district and Ontario junior championships that year, while also guiding U of T to the intercollegiate title.
John is one of only eight members of the U of T squash program to win the Molson Trophy from its inception in 1952 through to the 2011 season.
