Hamilton Cassels was a key member of the Football Blues in 1913 and 1914 and then in 1920 he coached the Blues to the Intercollegiate title while also playing for the Toronto Argonauts. The Blues and the Argos met in the 1920 Grey Cup game and faced with an unenviable situation, Cassels chose his coaching duties. The Blues defeated the Argos 16-3 to earn their fourth Grey Cup title.

Cassels was a longtime member of the U of T men's athletics Advisory Board, and in 1932 he played a key role in the hiring of Warren Stevens as the University's first Director of Athletics. He was also the University's solicitor for many years. His late son "Tony" Cassels was Chairman of the Varsity Arena Fund Advisory Committee (1981-83).
