The 1982-83 Men's Volleyball team was instrumental in establishing the success of the Varsity Blues Men's Volleyball program. Unranked throughout the season, the team won the OUAA championship by defeating 4th-ranked York University in the final. This win sent the Blues to the CIAU Nationals for the first time in over 15 years, and although not victorious, their success resulted in national recognition and accolades. It marked Varsity’s first Ontario title since 1966-67 and proved to be the first of four OUA crowns during the decade of the 1980s.
The Blues success prompted the Faculty's administration to establish a ‘centre court’ in the Athletic Centre sports gym, thus giving the program outstanding credibility, which in turn led to successful recruiting and large, enthusiastic crowds for all the major matches.
Led by Coach Orest Stanko, who later named the 1982-83 OUA Coach of the Year, this team truly changed the face of Men's Volleyball at U of T, and launched what is became the most successful Men's Volleyball program in the OUA over the last quarter century.
