CARVALHO AND GILL NAMED TO CANADIAN NATIONAL TEAM

As announced by Field Hockey Canada, University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey alumnae Rebecca Carvalho and Deepi Gill have been named to the Canadian national team.

The duo are set to join 22 other athletes for a competition tour in South Africa from January 5 to 23, 2026. The tour will offer a mix of training, friendly matches and officially capped contests against South Africa's national team. The South Africa tour will also serve as preparation for the 2026 World Cup Qualifier scheduled for March 18, 2026 in Santiago, Chile. Canada will compete against Japan, Ireland and Malaysia during the international showcase in Chile.

During her time with the Blues, Carvalho earned U SPORTS All-Canadian honours twice and OUA all-star recognition three times. Providing both exceptional defence while guiding the U of T offensive attack, the nursing major from Brampton appeared in a total of 65 matches for the Blue and White registering seven career goals as a defender.

As for Gill, the outstanding goalkeeper recently capped off her Varsity Blues career with OUA all-star, OUA Goalkeeper of the Year and U SPORTS All-Canadian honours in her final season in 2024. Also from Brampton, the global affairs graduate appeared in 51 total matches while accumulating 24 total clean sheets during her time at U of T.
