The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team advanced to the OUA Championship gold medal match after defeating the Waterloo Warriors in a semifinal shootout 1-0 on Saturday (Oct. 25) afternoon in Waterloo.
In another showdown between familiar foes, the Blues and Warriors found themselves in a defensive stalemate through regulation. Both sides would apply pressure but neither were able to secure an opportunity on goal until the second half. The home side Warriors took advantage of penalty corner chances, sending two shots clean onto the Toronto net. However, 2025 OUA goalkeeper of the year Mary Yang was up to the task. Each time the first-year Blue stood tall to maintain the 0-0 score.
With no goals through 60 minutes, the semifinal required a shootout to determine a winner. For Toronto, third-year midfielder and OUA all-star Alicia Lung secured the lone goal in the shootout converting a backhand to forehand effort into the lower left corner of the Waterloo net. Meanwhile, Yang continued her sensational performance turning aside all five Warriors shootout attempts.
The Blues will challenge for gold on Sunday (Oct. 26) in Waterloo, facing off against the semifinal winner between the York Lions and Guelph Gryphons. U of T will be competing for a 35
th OUA banner in program history and first since 2023. The gold medal game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., with the match streamed live on
