BLUES BASEBALL OPEN SEASON WINNING THREE OF FOUR

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team won three of four games on the opening weekend of their 2025 regular season at Dan Lang Field.

In back-to-back doubleheaders versus teams from the nation's capital, the Blues opened the new season on Saturday (Sept. 6) with a showdown against the Carleton Ravens, earning 9-6 and 9-8 wins. In Game 1 Toronto built up a quick lead scoring all nine runs within he first four innings. Four different Blues recorded multiple hit, led by a 3-for-3 day at the plate from fifth-year outfielder Peter Zidros. Meanwhile, five different players recorded an RBI, with Ryan Hsu and Jalen Worthen each registering two. Fifth-year pitcher Connor Broughton earned the Game 1 win collecting four strikeouts across six innings. Shifting to the one-run victory in Game 2, it was a seventh inning double from Hsu that claimed the walk-off win for U of T. Several first and second players shined for Toronto in the tightly contested victory as Diego Fuentes went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and two runs while both Jack Barber and Paul Verman added two RBI apiece. The pitching trio of Patrick Stasyszyn, Paul Kosztowniak, and Oscar Kraemer all took to the mound in Game 2 with the latter claiming the win.

On Sunday (Sept. 7), U of T were right back into the one-run game scenarios dropping a 5-4 decision to the Ottawa Gee-Gees before bouncing back with a 6-5 win. Trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh of Game 1, the Blues were able to get one run back but couldn't find the equalizer. Fuentes added another two RBI on a 3-for-4 outing at the plate. Meanwhile, in Game 2 U of T took advantage of a three run second and fourth to reverse fortunes and close down any shot at a Gee-Gees come-from-behind effort. Blues fourth-year veteran outfielder Sam Aslanowicz led the way going 2-for-3 plus a walk registering two RBI and one run. Fourth-year pitcher Ethan Kwong earned the win going 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and just three hits conceded.

The Blues now prepare for a long road trip to Sudbury where they will face-off against the Laurentian Voyageurs in a doubleheader next Sunday, Sept. 14. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
