As announced by Ontario University Athletics (OUA), the University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team received three major award winners and two OUA all-stars following the completion of the 2025 season.
Second-year outfielder and pitcher Diego Fuentes received Most Valuable Hitter honours, Delivering on a sensational sophomore campaign with the Blues, Fuentes was critical in both Toronto's run through the OUA and CNUC postseasons. Appearing in 23 total contests through the fall, he finished with a .536 batting average, coming up with clutch hit after clutch hit. With 12 of his 45 hits coming with extra bases, including four home runs, Fuentes registered a total of 27 RBI while also crossing the plate himself for 28 runs.
On the mound, first-year pitcher Matthew Clarke was named Rookie of the Year. The management major from Scarborough finished the fall with a team-high 41.1 innings pitched, including seven starts. Conceding just 37 hits on 176 batters faced, he also tied for a team-high 43 strikeouts. Most impressive of all, he stepped up in big moments earning wins in both the OUA gold medal game and CNUC national semifinal.
Rounding out the major award winners for U of T, Andrew Needles was recognized as OUA Coach of the Year for a third consecutive season. Since taking over the Blues baseball program in 2023, Needles has showcased consistent success with Toronto winning three straight OUA banners. This season he les the Blues to a 24-8 overall record, while spearheading a 15-game winning streak to end the fall resulting in another OUA championship title and the CNUC banner.
Along with the Most Valuable Hitter award, Fuentes was also named an OUA all-star alongside teammate Spenser Ross. A second-year infielder, Ross was a work-horse for U of T this fall appearing in 28 games.
