Fourth-year pitcher Ethan Kwong struck out 15 in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Acadia Axemen on Day 2 of the Canadian national university championships in Montreal.
With the win, the 2-0 Blues will meet the 2-0 Guelph Gryphons tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the championship final, while the loser will have another chance to fight for the top spot in the double elimination tournament.
It came down to the wire on Friday, as U of T grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion. The Blues were down 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Carter Hercun singled, scoring two runs.
After seven scoreless innings, Acadia got on the board in the eighth inning after Kyle Sampson hit into a double play, but one run scored.
Kwong earned the win for U of T Varsity Blues. The starter gave up three hits and zero runs over eight innings, striking out 15 and walking three. Noah Scrimgeour started the game for Acadia Axemen. The righty allowed four hits and one run over seven and one-third innings, striking out 15 and walking four.
Hercun led U of T with two RBI. The infielder went 1-for-3 on the day. Diego Fuentes led the Blues with two hits in three at bats.
