The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team edged the Carleton Ravens, 7-6, in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon (Oct. 9) at Welland Stadium, as Diego Fuentes delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Â
The thrilling contest marked a rematch of the 2025 OUA championship final, with the Blues once again coming out on top in a hard-fought battle between the provincial rivals.
Â
With the win, the Blues will now take on the Brock Badgers, who defeated the Queen's Gaels in their lone game on Day 1, in the double-elimination format tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Â
Toronto wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Fuentes opened the scoring with an RBI double to right field before Elias Rubio Reyes and Kirk Gibson followed with run-scoring singles.
Â
The Blues continued to build their advantage in the second inning when Marcus Santos doubled to centre field to bring home another run. Gibson then launched a solo home run over the left-field fence in the third, extending Toronto's lead to 5-0.
Â
Toronto carried a commanding 6-0 advantage into the later innings, but the Ravens refused to go quietly.
Â
After getting on the board in the sixth, Carleton mounted a furious comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits to even the score at 6-6. Jordan Cruz delivered a two-run double during the rally, while Carter Smith, Thomas Fournier and Benji Wdowczyk also drove in runs.
Â
With the game suddenly tied and the momentum shifting, the Blues responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Fuentes stepped to the plate and delivered the decisive RBI single, bringing home the winning run to secure the dramatic 7-6 walk-off victory.
Â
Fuentes and Gibson led Toronto offensively with two hits and two RBI apiece, while Gibson's third-inning home run provided one of the game's biggest highlights.
Â
On the mound, Lucas Rigakos turned in a strong start for the Blues, allowing just one run on four hits over five and one-third innings, while striking out seven. Jonathan Onderisin earned the victory in relief, recording a strikeout in one-third of an inning to close out the contest.
