The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team went 2-2 after splitting back-to-back doubleheaders this past weekend versus the Queen's Gaels and York Lions.
U of T dropped their first game 9-7 against the Gaels before bouncing back with a dominant 13-0 shutout victory in Game 2.
In the opener, U of T held a 7-6 advantage after five innings of action. However, being held scoreless over the next two innings the Gaels were able to tie the game to extend to an eighth and secure the win from there. Second-year outfielder and pitcher Diego Fuentes tallied three hits and a walk in the back-and-forth contest, while first-year Haven Tai led all Blues with three RBI. First-year pitcher Matthew Clarke did a bulk of the work on the mound, going 4.1 innings with seven hits and four earned runs conceded.
Shifting to Game 2, fourth-year pitcher Ethan Kwong picked up the shutout win dealing across five innings with just one hit and one walk given up. An eight run first inning and five run third inning from the Blues allowed for the decisive win to conclude after just five innings. Fourth-year infielder Kirk Gibson led the charge with three RBI and two runs on a 2-for-3 outing at the plate. Fifth-year outfielder Peter Zidros added another two RBI, while second-year infielder Spenser Ross has the shot of the game with a first-inning home run which set the tone.
On Sunday (Sept. 21), the outcomes followed a similar pattern as Toronto dropped Game 1 18-6 versus York before delivering another outstanding effort in a 9-1 victory.
After four innings, U of T remained in striking distance but an 11-run explosion from the Lions across the following two innings resulted in the tough Game 1 defeat. Both Fuentes and Tai were the lone Blues to record multiple hits in the effort, while third-year infielder Ryan Hsu drove in two RBI with a powerful triple.
On the mound for Game 2, Fuentes helped the Blues rebound delivering four solid innings with just four hits and one run allowed in the victory. This time four different U of T batters registered multiple hits led by Gibson and fourth-year Blues veteran Sam Aslanowicz. Gibson finished 2-for-4, including a home run, while Aslanowicz went 2-for-3 with a triple. Gibson now leads the team with 15 RBI this season, while Aslanowicz ranks second on the team in runs crossing the plate 15 times so far.
Toronto now holds a 9-6 record versus OUA opponents this season. The Blues have one more weekend of doubleheaders at TMU (Sept. 27) and home for McMaster (Sept. 28) before OUA postseason action begins with the OUA Regionals.
