CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: U SPORTS WRESTLING

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues wrestling team will be sending six competitors to the 2025 U SPORTS Wrestling National Championships, hosted by Brock University inside Canada Games Park from Feb. 28 - Mar. 1.

Achieving qualification through their performance at the OUA Wrestling Championships, Ketan Nawbatt, Josiah Mayers-Noel, and Omar Al-Lahham all earned a berth to the national showcase as a Top 5 finisher in their weight class. Additional entrants for the Blues will include three more wrestlers as sixth-place finishers in their weight class at the provincial championships; Keegan McMartin, Jacob Fritz, and on the women's side of the draw Maya Salman.

Appearing at his first U SPORTS national championships, Nawbatt will enter the highly competitive 68kg bracket as an underdog of sorts following his fifth-place finish at OUA's. The third-year California native has been busy this season, earning wins over TMU and Lakehead at the provincial championships. Additionally, during the invitational season he picked up a bronze at the McMaster Open and fourth-place finish at the Brock Open in early January.

Also appearing at his first U SPORTS championships in just his first season with the Varsity Blues, Mayers-Noel has come on strong late in the season competing in the 76kg weight class. Along with wins over York and Lakehead at the OUA championships, Mayers-Noel also defeated opponents from Guelph and UNB to claim bronze at the Guelph Open in late January, while also grabbing bronze at the U of T Open back in November.

Falling to sixth-place at the OUA championships primarily due to an injury early in the tournament, Salman is now provided another chance to rebound from the provincial performance as the lone female Varsity Blue competing on the national stage. Entered in the 65kg bracket, Salman showed herself to be a strong competitor early in the year with a silver medal effort at the McMaster Open. She will be looking to bounce back to that early season form when facing the best from across the country this weekend.

Rounding out the men's roster for the weekend, Al-Lahham is entered at 90kg, McMartin at 82kg, and Fritz at 72kg. Both McMartin and Fritz are senior veterans, with the latter bringing plenty of previous experience from his time as a Saskatchewan Huskie prior to joining the Blues this year. Meanwhile, Al-Lahham has jumped right into the fray in his first season, beginning the year with a silver at the McMaster Open, before placing Top 5 in the province at the OUA championships just three weeks ago.

Competition inside Canada Games Park is scheduled to begin with round-robin matches on Friday, Feb. 28, followed by elimination and medal matches on Saturday, Mar. 1. Both days will be streamed on the CBC Sports YouTube channel and the medal matches on Sunday starting with the bronze will be on CBC Sports and CBC Gem.
