U OF T WRESTLING FINISHES COMPETITION SCHEDULE WITH U SPORTS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues wrestling team concluded their competition schedule with the 2025 U SPORTS Wrestling National Championships, hosted by Brock University inside Canada Games Park from Feb. 28 - Mar. 1.

With four wrestlers competing across the two-day national showcase, the Toronto men finished 11th in the overall team standings.

Delivering the top result for the Blues, Josiah Mayers-Noel picked up a fourth-place finish at his first U SPORTS national championships, competing in the 76kg weight class. The first-year Varsity Blue opened the weekend with three straight wins, including an impressive 10-0 technical fall victory versus Michael Thomas of Lethbridge. He then closed out the robin-robin matches with a hard fought 11-9 decision defeat at the hands of Brock's Cole Coghill, who received the home crowd boost in the tightly contested match-up. With a 3-1 round-robin record, Mayers-Noel earned a spot in the bronze medal match on Saturday, but would come up just short of the podium in a loss versus Luken Lawson of McMaster.

Rounding out the Blues results on the mats at Canada Games Park, fifth-year U SPORTS veteran Jacob Fritz placed seventh overall in the 72kg bracket, while fourth-year wrestler Keegan McMartin and first-year Varsity Blue Omar Al-Lahham each placed eighth in the 82kg and 90kg categories, respectively.

An ever-improving team effort for the Blues, the four wrestlers at the national championships marked a new high in recent years, following one representative from U of T at the 2023 event and two at the 2024 showcase. With the 2024-25 campaign marking the first as head coach for Dene Ringuette following five seasons as an assistant coach, the future of Varsity Blues wrestling appears to be trending in a positive direction.
