MAYERS-NOEL EARNS U SPORTS SILVER; MEN FINISH EIGHTH OVERALL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues wrestling team concluded their 2025-26 competition schedule this weekend at the 2026 U SPORTS Wrestling National Championships, hosted by Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.

With three Top 5 finishes among five entrants, including a national silver medal, the U of T men placed eighth overall among the 22 participating institutions with 23 total points.

The Toronto women, with two competitors entered, finished 14th with six points.

Capturing Toronto's second national silver medal over the last three seasons, Josiah Mayers-Noel delivered the top result among the Blues wrestlers. After earning OUA 76kg bronze just a few weeks ago, Mayers-Noel improved on that effort on the national stage. The second-year standout claimed a berth to the gold medal match after a perfect 4-0 round-robin effort on Friday. With wins over opponents from Lethbridge, Western, York, and Alberta – Mayers-Noel matched up with the OUA silver medalist from McMaster, Luken Lawson. Familiar opponents, the pair once again battled and showcased themselves as serious competition for one another, but Lawson eventually edged out Mayers-Noel for the gold medal. As a silver medalist, Mayers-Noel is also recognized as a U SPORTS second team All-Candian.

Three more Blues earned Top 5 finishes at the U SPORTS Championships. Varsity Blues veteran Andrija Rasovic placed fourth overall in the men's 100kh weight class, while first-year Blue Senuki Dasanayaka also achieved a fourth-place finish in the women's 56kg category. After an at-large berth to the national showcase, Dhruv Khanna made the most of the opportunity with a fifth-place result in the men's 57kg event.

U of T results were rounded out by a seventh-place finish for Lucas Andtbacka in the 90kg bracket, a ninth-place finish for Ketan Nawbatt at 65kg, and a 10th-place finish for Maya Salman who had her attempt at the women's 62kg cut short due to injury.

The 2025-26 campaign marks itself as a beacon for the ascent of the U of T wrestling program. This year the Varsity Blues earned the most medals ever at a single provincial championship, the first two podium finish for U of T women at the OUA Championships, the first Top 10 finish for U of T men at a U SPORTS Championships in more than two decades, and a second national silver medal in three seasons. On an upward trajectory, the future continues to look bright for Varsity Blues wrestling.
