BLUES SERVE AS HOST FOR U OF T OPEN

The University of Toronto Vasity Blues wrestling team served as host to some of the very best from across the province for the annual U of T Open on Saturday (Nov. 29) inside the Athletic Centre.

On the men's side of the draw, U of T was able to convert four Top 5 finishes into a sixth place team result among the 35 total clubs entered into the final showcase event for the fall semester. Reaching the podium in the men's 100kg category, Varsity Blues veteran Andrija Rasovic bounced back from an opening round defeat earning three straight subsequent victories to earn a bronze medal. Second-year standout Omar Al-Lahham grabbed a fourth-place finish with a 4-2 record in the 90kg bracket, while first-year Blue Pirouz Ziabakhshtabari also went 4-2 to take fourth in the 76kg event. Rounding out the men's top results, fourth-year wrestler Ketan Nawbatt claimed fifth in the 65kg category with a 3-2 record through his five matches on the day.

For the U of T women, the Varsity Blues placed fifth in the team standings among the 22 participating clubs. Fourth-year PhD student Senuki Dasanayaka captured a second-place finish in the 56kg competition. Third-year Varsity Blue Maya Salman went 2-1 in the 62lg bracket to earn a third-place result, first-year standout Ziyi He converted a 2-2 day into a fourth-place finish in the 53kg category.

Marking the end of the fall competition schedule, the Blues will return to the mat next in 2026 attending the Brock Open on Saturday, Jan. 10.
