Traveling to Ottawa to begin their regular season, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team saw their Saturday (Sept. 7) doubleheader versus Carleton cancelled due to rain, while Sunday's (Sept. 8) doubleheader versus Ottawa resulted in tough 1-0 and 7-3 losses.
After the rain-out on Saturday, the Blues opened Sunday with a pitching duel. U of T starting pitcher Josh Neposlan and delivered 15 outs through five innings of work, striking out eight, while conceding just three hits. However, the Gee-Gees were also dealing from the mound and with one run scored early in the bottom of the third, it would turn out to be all that was needed to secure the win for the home side.
In the follow up, both team saw their bats come to life. 2023 OUA second team all-star Sam Aslanowicz led the way for the Blues, delivering a two RBI double, while finishing the contest with an additional walk and run. Very disciplined at the plate, U of T drew seven total walks as Ottawa needed to utilize four different pitchers through the seven inning contest. But an early lead built by the Gee-Gees once again proved to be enough, despite a two-run seventh inning comeback push by the Blues.
Following an exhibition versus the Guelph Gryphons in the middle of the week, Blues baseball will return to their home field as they welcome the Laurentian Voyageurs to Dan Lang Field for a Sunday (Sept. 15) doubleheader. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m., followed by a tentative 2 p.m. start for Game 2.
