The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team went 1-1 in a Saturday (Sept 26) afternoon doubleheader versus the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury.

Marking the final weekend of the OUA regular season, the Blues dropped Game 1 by a score of 6-1 before bouncing back with a 14-2 victory in Game 2. With the split, the Blues end the regular season with an 8-3 record placing them in a tie for second in the overall standings.

A defensively duel in Game 1 saw both teams combine for just 11 total hits. The Voyaguers were able to cash in early establishing a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Blues tried to use aggressive base-running to find their way back into the game, finishing with six total stolen bases, but a late spark was not able to be found. First-year outfielder Aidan Vivaldi was the lone Blue to cross the plate, while starting pitcher Jonathan ONderisin recorded seven strikeouts across five innings of work.

A completely different result in Game 2, the Blues were on-fire from the opening at-bat. 10 different U of T batters registered a hit with the Blues producing nine runs across the first four innings. A final five-run sixth secured the win in the regular season finale. Jackson Gannett led the way going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, while veteran infielder Kirk Gibson proved to be the beneficiary of the high-powered attack crossing the plate three times for a game-high three runs. On the mound, Ricky Klimaszewski shutdown Laurentian with five strikeouts in five innings. Armin Najmaie appeared in relief to secure the win.

Finishing near the top of the standings, the Blues will now prepare for the revamped OUA Championship. Now set as a double elimination tournament format, as opposed to the Final Four setup in recent seasons, the defending champion Blues will head to St. Catharines with another banner within their sights. Brock University will host the provincial showcase from October 9-11, with further details to follow.
