The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team split back-to-back doubleheaders versus the Queen's Gaels on Saturday (Sept. 19) and York Lions on Sunday (Sept. 20) at Dan Lang Field.

Toronto first fell 5-4 to the Gaels in Game 1 of their doubleheader. The narrow loss featured several strong performances at the plate as U of T was able to out-hit Queen's 13-11. First-year infielder Elias Rubio-Reyes continued his strong start to his debut season with a 3-for-3, one walk, and one RBI outing, while four more Blues registered double-digit hits. That included fourth-year catcher Matthew Fischer who went 2-for-4 with a team-high two RBI. On the mound, Jonathan Onderisin and Taisei Hihara combined for six strikeouts. Bouncing back in Game 2, the Blues earned another close 7-5 victory. Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, first-year outfielder Aidan Vivaldi delivered in the clutch with a two run walk-off home run. Third-year pitcher Kenny Leung was awarded the win pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

The tight scores continued on Sunday as Toronto first earned a 6-5 win over the York Lions to open the day. Fischer collected the walk-off RBI in the bottom of the seventh, finishing Game 1 with three RBI. Fourth-year infielder Ryan Hsu was also essential to the Blues success going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. The pair also recorded two stolen bases apiece. First-year pitcher Ricky Klimaszewski registered seven strikeouts across six innings, while Hihara once again appeared in relief. A different story in Game 2, York secured a 12-4 win to close out the weekend of action.Hsu added another two hits to his day, along with an RBI. However, Blues pitchers would concede at least one hit to all nine York batters resulting in the tough final score.

Suffering their first two losses of the OUA regular season, the Blues now sit in second in the overall standings with an 8-2 record. U of T will close out their OUA regular season schedule with a road trip to Sudbury to face the Laurentian Voyageurs in a doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 26. The results will be essential for Toronto to claim a strong seed ahead of the OUA postseason.
