BLUES SWEEP GAELS ON THE ROAD

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team defeated the Queen's Gaels 2-0 and 8-6 on Saturday, September 21 in Kingston, Ont.

Strong pitching from both teams kept the game close, but it was U of T's early offence that made the difference.
 
The Blues struck first in the opening inning when Jakob Cellupica's single drove in a run, giving U of T an early lead.
 
Kevin Angers earned the win for U of T, pitching four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, striking out five, and walking four. Max Lanoue took the loss for Queen's.
 
The Varsity Blues bullpen was outstanding, with Tyson Espiritu Santo, Ethan Kwong, and Diego Fuentes each contributing scoreless innings to secure the shutout.
 
Offensively, U of T collected nine hits, led by Cellupica and Carter Hercun, who each had two hits. Cellupica and Matt Fischer both drove in a run.
 
Toronto 8, Queen's 6
 
U of T mounted an impressive comeback to defeat Queen's 8-6 in their second game on Saturday. After trailing by as much as five runs, the Blues surged ahead in the late innings to secure the victory.
 
Jakob Cellupica was the hero, hitting a two-run homer to left field in the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie and give U of T the lead for good.
 
Queen's jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, with Patrick O'Sullivan's sacrifice fly and Owen Sartor's RBI single making it 2-0. The Gaels extended their lead in the second inning, thanks to a double by Jonah Brotman and another RBI single from Sartor.
 
The Varsity Blues fought back, tying the game in the fourth inning with a double by Spencer Ross and an RBI single from Diego Fuentes.
 
Paul Kosztowniak picked up the win for U of T, throwing three and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out five and walking none. Theo Higgins took the loss for Queen's, giving up two runs on three hits over three and one-third innings. Connor Broughton started on the mound for the Varsity Blues, giving up six runs (five earned) on four hits over one and one-third innings, with two strikeouts and five walks.
 
U of T accumulated 11 hits, with Sam Aslanowicz leading the way, going 3-for-4. Cellupica and Ross each drove in two runs. The Varsity Blues were aggressive on the base paths, stealing four bases, including two from Aslanowicz.
 
Next, the Varsity Blues face off against the York University Lions on Sunday at Dan Lang Field.
