2024 CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: VARSITY BLUES BASEBALL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team will look to defend their provincial title as they host the OUA Final Four this weekend (Oct. 11-12) in Ajax, Ont.

The Blues punched their ticket to the tournament after winning all four games they played at the OUA Regional Qualifying Tournament, taking down York, Laurentian, and TMU in round robin play before a taking down York again in a thrilling 3-2 win in the OUA Regional Final on Sunday, October 6. The Blues outscored their opponents 23-7 across the four games.

The Brock Badgers, Queen's Gaels, and Waterloo Warriors also won their regional qualifiers to advance to the Final Four. 

The Blues closed out their regular season with five consecutive wins to enter the playoffs with lots of momentum, which they carried into their clean sweep of the OUA Regionals, giving them nine straight wins entering the OUA Championship.

Owen Taylor lead the Blues offense last weekend, driving in seven runs in four games, while fourth-year infielder Jakob Cellupia picked up five runs batted in.

Fourth-year starting pitcher Kevin Angers tossed a statement performance to open the OUA Regional, throwing seven shutout innings while striking out 13 and allowing just three hits, leading the Blues to a 6-0 victory over York.

Josh Neposlan started for the Blues on Sunday and went six and one-third innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out two while picking up the win in the deciding game of the OUA Regionals.

Toronto has been a mainstay at the OUA championships, appearing in the tournament since 2015, a run of eight seasons. The Blues took home the title last year in a 6-5 win over Waterloo, marking their second championship in three years after winning in 2021.
