The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team kicked off their OUA regional qualifier with a 6-0 victory over the York Lions on Friday night at

Fourth-year pitcher Kevin Angers shone on the night. The robotics engineering major from Mississauga struck out 13, allowing only three hits in seven innings of shutout baseball. Third-year pitcher Ethan Kwong finished it off, striking out four and allowing two hits in two innings.

The Blues broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the sixth. 2023 OUA most valuable player Owen Taylor singled on a hard ground ball. proceeded to steel second and advanced to third on a passed ball before Carter Hercun drove him in with a single. A Jakob Cellupica double then scored Hercun and Toronto took a 2-0 lead into the seventh.

The Blues added one more run in each of the seventh and eighth, and three in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.

Taylor led the Blues with three hits and three RBI, while Cellupia had two of each.

The Blues have a big Saturday ahead of them. Due to weather forecasts, round robin play has been moved earlier. Toronto will take on Laurentian at 10:00 a.m., and TMU at 2:30 p.m., to fight for a spot in the final.
