The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team earned two more wins on Saturday (Sept. 23), defeating the TMU Bold 6-2 and 5-4 in back-to-back contests at Dan Laing Field.
The pair of home victories extends U of T's current winning streak to seven straight, improving their season record to 8-1.
In Game 1 on Saturday, starting pitcher Kento Moriyoshi delivered a complete game for the Blues, conceding just one earned run on seven hits and two walks, while striking out four Bold batters.
At the plate, eight of the nine Toronto batters picked up a hit with both Sam Aslanowicz and Kristyan Puyols-Gennosar recording two. Fifth-year catcher Puyols-Gennosar nailed a two RBI single in the bottom of the first to put the Blues into the lead.
A much tighter contest in Game 2, TMU were able to quickly score three runs in the first inning to put pressure on the home side. Toronto rebounded with runs scored in the second, third, and fifth innings. All even heading into the bottom of the seventh, U of T loaded the bases and converted a hit by pitch for the game-winning run.
Lemuel Beach was at the plate drawing the hit by pitch for the win, after going 1-for-1 with two additional walks. Meanwhile, Puyols-Gennosar added another RBI to his day.
Toronto starting pitcher Clayton Winteler was throwing heat, striking out six through four innings. Paul Kosztowniak and Owen Taylor stepped to the mound in relief for U of T.
Following the postponement of a doubleheader versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees originally scheduled for tomorrow (Sept. 24), the Blues will have a full week to prepare for another doubleheader versus the TMU Bold. First pitch next Saturday, Sept. 30 is set for 11:30 a.m.
