Competing in their final of three round robin games at the OUA Regional Qualifier this weekend in Toronto, the U of T Varsity Blues claimed a 20-1 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs to advance to the regional final later this afternoon (Oct. 8).
Following wins over York and TMU over the last two days, the Sunday morning victory versus Laurentian lands the Blues the top spot of the regional qualifier, providing them with a chance to book their ticket to the OUA Championship next weekend with one more victory.
The Blues delivered in convincing fashion versus the opponents from Sudbury, highlighted by a stellar performance from outfielder Owen Taylor who drove in five runs on a 4-for-4 day at the plate, including a two run home run in the second inning. Also recording multiple RBI's, standout hitter Jakob Cellupica added four RBI, while veteran catcher Kristyan Puyol-Genossar continuined an impressive weekend with another three RBI's. In total, eight different Blues batters recorded an RBI in the win.
On the mound, starting pitcher Connor Broughton went the full four innings striking out six Voyageurs, while giving up just one unearned run on three hits and two walks.
Toronto will now face-off against the TMU Bold in their regional final, with the winner advancing to next weekends OUA Championship in Hamilton. First pitch in the deciding game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
